Hallmarked in London in 1784 by John Wakelin & William Taylor, this handsome, George III, Antique Sterling Silver Soup Tureen, is Neoclassical in style, featuring sunken half fluting to the body and lid, reed borders, an engraved coat of arms and an acorn finial. The soup tureen measures 9.75″(25cm) tall, by 16.5″(42cm) wide, by 9″(23cm) deep, and weighs 90.8 troy ounces.
The crest belongs to the Skipwith Baronetcy, of Newbold Hall in the County of Warwick.
In 1785 Sir Thomas Skipwith, 4th Baronet, married Selina Shirley, granddaughter of the 1st Earl Ferrers, and the coat of arms appears to show this union, which would suggest that it was given on the occasion of the wedding.
