The perimeter of this Georgian sampler features a continuous band of acorns and oak leaves done in cross stitch. The text is done in a style similar to a seed stitch, with the use of different coloured thread throughout. In descending order is the Lord’s Prayer, a prayer of thanks, a dedication to the young girl’s mother and then it is signed and dated, “Elizabeth Lester her work Aged 11 January 26 1797”. Below her signature are trees, flowers, birds, potted plants and a building. The backing is a finely woven linen, which has a small number of minor tears. Overall it is in good condition. The frame measures 440 mm (17.25 inches) in height, and 345 mm (13.5 inches) in width. The glass and frame have some considerable age, as evidenced by the imperfections in the glass.
