A fine antique silver argyle, or argyll; a lidded gravy jug that features a hot water jacket that is filled with boiling water thus keeping the gravy or sauce hot. The water is poured through a lidded opening in the handle mount and fills the space between the outer body and the inner shell.
The jug and cover are both finely engraved with bright-cut decorations as well as a prominent family coat of arms, and the pull-off lid is surmounted by an urn-shaped silver finial. The elegant handle with thumbpiece is made from stained fruit wood, probably apply or pear.
