Gillows were making furniture from 1730. Synonymous with the use of the best quality materials, superb design and craftsmanship, they boasted the largest stock of furniture outside of London. The Lancaster based company who also uniquely opened workshops in London during the 1760s, continued to expand into the 19th century whereupon they became Waring and Gillow.
