The items are decorated with beautiful transfer printed birds and Chinoiserie details, hand coloured in orange, terracotta and gilt.

C.J. Mason was the youngest son of Miles Mason, one of the early ones of the second wave of British porcelain makers alongside Spode and others. Miles Mason was a prominent porcelain retailer in London at the time that most porcelain came from China, imported by the East India Company. When those imports stopped in 1791 (due to the racketeering at the porcelain auctions by Mason and his fellow dealers), he seized the opportunity and started to experiment in making his own porcelain. By the early 1800s, Mason had developed both very strong ironstone, and bone china. The Masons copied the Chinese designs they used to import and became famous for large Chinoiserie dinner and dessert wares made of “Patent Ironstone”, which was a new form of porcelain that was patented by C. J. Mason. However, they also made very fine porcelain tea services.

This set would have been part of such a large tea service. In those days, tea services came with coffee cups as well. This set has a nice natural Rococo Revival shape (you can see that the handle looks like a naturally grown twig) and decorated with a beautiful transfer print of the kind the Masons were famous for. Birds and Chinoiserie details are printed in terracotta, then hand coloured in fiery orange/red and picked off with a bit of gilt.

The set is unmarked as was common at the time.

Condition report The set is in excellent antique condition without any damage, repairs or crazing. There is light wear as visible in the pictures.

Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker’s recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Etcetera – I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

Factory in Worcester which had London showrooms at 155 New Bond Street and Coventry Street, London.

This elegant vase dates to circa 1830. It is made with a bulbous form which rises into a tall slender graduated neck. The colour is an unusual soft pastel green which is decorated with a fabulous hand painted flower display in bright colours further enhanced with rich and intricately hand painted gilt scrolling around the edges and sides.

This vase has come from a private old English collection and is in very good condition but does show signs of possible old restoration to the gilding around the foot. We have taken several photographs to show its finish and condition.

HIGH REGENCY PERIOD/ERA.

This is WITHOUT A DOUBT, the finest (and probably largest) Dinner Service we have EVER seen!
It numbers 175 pieces in total!
It was MOST DEFINITELY, made for one of the large Manor Houses in the UK, during the Reign of George III
(Very Downton Abbey-esque!)

We are of the opinion that it was ‘custom’ made by Davenport for it’s original owner, probably a Baron, Baroness, Lord, Lady, Duke or Duchess ….. take your pick of ‘nobility’!

Just consider the Dinner Party, where you would need over 60 Dinner Plates. It is easy to conclude that this service, being over 200 years old, has suffered some losses over the centuries and could very easily have been a 100 piece dinner service when originally produced.

The pattern and style, is an homage to ‘Japanese Imari Style China”, with it’s classic Imari cobalt blue, green, orange and pink floral designs/patterns, all accentuated by GORGEOUS 24k gold gilt work.

What makes this particular pattern and service SO RARE and OUTSTANDING is the incorporation of royal/sky blue patterns/panels/chevrons, on all pieces.

You could search all your life and not find this pattern …. ‘let alone’ a Service of 175 pieces.

We are of the opinion, that the use and addition of the ‘royal blue’ chevrons on this service, could also indicate that this service was quite possibly, originally made, for a member of the ‘British Royal family’.

Provenance: From a Private Collection in Houston, TX. The service was originally purchased by an ancestor, from Cains Inc. (High-End Dealers) in Bossier City, LA in 1979 for a ‘SUBSTANTIAL’ sum. We possess the receipt.

Condition: Mainly in very good original condition. The largest game platter has a historic repair (metal staples) and one open tureen has a crack and historic repair. One small lidded tureen has a replacement handle and some repairs to stand for large lidded tureen/centerpiece. Some other pieces has very minor losses and one or two repairs but, otherwise this Service is in ‘VERY GOOD’ condition for it’s age and use.

The large lidded tureen centerpiece, is worth around $12,000, on it’s own. A similar, single medium sized Tureen, but not this pattern (with the Royal Blue), would cost you over $3,500 and a single Plate around $500. Now do the math! LOL

This teapot clearly mimicks the famous Worcester teapots of that era, complete with flower finial.

The Caughley factory ran between 1775 and 1799, founded by Ambrose Gallimore and Thomas Turner. It produced very fine soft-paste porcelain made for the middle classes in mostly underglaze blue and gilt decorations. Today the items are very collectable because of their high quality and elegant yet simple decorations, which tell the tale of the more ordinary well-to-do population, rather than the extremely wealthy clientele that many other factories served.

This pot is decorated with the famous “Compagnie des Indes” pattern, with its characteristic bold pink-themed flower sprays and a pink scale border. The finial consists of a sculpted flower, imitating the famous Worcester teapots of that era.

The teapot is unmarked, as is common for that period.

CONDITION REPORT The teapot is in perfect antique condition without any damage, repairs, crazing or even wear other than a missing petal from the finial and some very light scratches, as can be expected form an item this age.
