The chair has been with us almost since the beginning of time. A piece of furniture not just for practical purposes, but as an expression of royalty, of religion, of hierarchy, of art. We examine the history of this unique object which has served each one of us since childhood.
Through my work I transform each chair into a unique and individual object. Chairs that once were mass-produced and homogenous, become singular and unique: re-cycled, re-furbished, re-mixed and re-decorated.
I am particularly interested to give value and meaning to something that has been overlooked. To free the object from its traditional use and turn it into something special. Through this process the chair that was once used on a daily basis, becomes a self-sufficient piece of art. Hereby we explore traditional historical objects that gain value by a mere change of perspective. It is these themes of chairs as sculptural objects and art as object of utility that I am particularly fascinated by.
It is the love for the daily things that we surround ourselves with, their unique shape and expression, that give me hope that not all is lost to pure consumerism and IKEAlisation

Pair of chairs by Christian Durupt, French cabinetmaker who notably worked with Charlotte Perriand.

Made from solid pine, a type of wood prized for its robustness, they rest on four tapered legs for an elegant base supporting a thick seat with a high backrest and integrated handle.

At first glance, the deconstructivist chair stands as a bold departure from convention. Angular defiance characterizes its form, with a square base set at an 60-degree angle, challenging expectations and inviting intrigue. This departure from orthodoxy speaks volumes, hinting at a deeper narrative woven into its design.

Design
The chair’s silhouette defies gravity, anchoring itself in a realm where innovation meets functionality.The seat, an opening within the square frame, defies traditional norms, embracing geometric abstraction as a testament to functional artistry. Here, the back leg emerges, arching gracefully to form both seat and backrest, blurring the lines between structure and comfort. This fusion of form and function heralds an interesting idea of seating design, where boundaries are pushed and possibilities explored.A closer inspection reveals a certain craftsmanship imbued within every facet of the chair. The arc-shaped backleg, serving as both support and focal point, showcases a mortise and tenon connection, a nod to traditional joinery techniques. The choice of wood, with a slender 2cm thickness, adds to the chair’s allure, while its light brown hue with anthracite undertones evokes a sense of timeless sophistication.

Condition
The condition of the chair is very good with only small diffuse scratches.

A fantastic pair of antique carved side chairs. They were made in continental Europe, possibly Denmark, or somewhere close and they are quite early, dating from around the 1790-1820 period, or even earlier.

The quality is outstanding, they have gorgeous and intricate carving depicting eagles heads on the backs, the legs are also beautifully carved.

We have had them re-polished and re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric, retaining the original horse hair stuffing. The condition is excellent for their age.
