In Rockwell Kent’s multifaceted career as an artist, he explored and excelled at painting, illustration, writing, printmaking, and design, all of which were bound by his enthusiastic wanderlust. Having completed several apprenticeships and studied at multiple schools, including Columbia University, Kent traveled the world in search of inspiration, spending extended periods of time in places as varied as Newfoundland, Ireland, Alaska, Maine, the Soviet Union, and an archipelago off the tip of South America (which he reached by sailboat.) Kent found the barren, rugged nature of these landscapes and climates to inspire his work. He was regarded as a most successful printmaker and contemporary painter of his time, though he later lost popularity for his Communist sympathies. Among many legacies, Kent is remembered for his illustration of the literary classic, Moby Dick.

This rare find is a signed etching by French artist Louis Icart (1888-1950) known for his devotion to portraying females and fashion during the Art Deco period. This artwork has been in a family collection for decades. According to published books, this piece is entitled “Coach” and is an etching with aquatint. Color is hand applied and gorgeous! Hand signed by artist in lower right corner. Lower left corner shows number and windmill stamp of editor. Original frame shown, etching is intact no damage.. Condition is excellent with no obvious defects. Frame is in good vintage condition with small surface scratches consistent with age throughout. This artwork pairs nicely with a second Louis Icart etching listed separately .
