Crafted by a blacksmith’s hand in the early 1800s, these wrought iron driveway gates are a handsome addition to the entrance of a traditional townhouse. Simply designed with vertical bars and sweeping arches, each gate is decorated with spearhead finials, currently finished in gold paint, between a pair of scrolls. They are in good condition with a handcrafted, age-old look, slight bends and distortion adding to the character of these antique gates.
Wrought Iron Gates
Gates and ironwork made from wrought iron have stood the test of time. This traditional method of craftsmanship sees the metal heated to a high temperature and then hammered into shape by a blacksmith’s hand, creating a robust and durable finish. The more wrought iron is worked, the stronger it becomes, making some of the most ornate antique gates some of the strongest. Large scale commercial production of wrought iron products ended in the mid 1970s due to the expensive and time-consuming nature of blacksmithing, making wrought iron gates true antiques, showcasing talented craftsmanship of the past.
