One of the rarest and finest Geo. IV period Old Sheffield Plate Cake, Flower or Bread Baskets we have ever acquired. This basket is large, impressive, hand-chased and hand engraved with Rococo mounted border and pierced Rococo handle. It is in near pristine condition and retains its extremely rare and hardly ever seen “James Dixon & Sons” badge or “label” (illustrated underneath) showing the British coat of Arms. This is a very heavy basket of unparalleled quality with absolutely no plate loss whatsoever (quite possibly professionally replated in the last quarter of a century.) James Dixon and Sons of Sheffield were prolific makers of Old Sheffield Plate and continued making fine sterling silver and Victorian electroplated wares well into the early 20th century. They were Royal Warranted silversmiths and their pieces are always of the utmost quality and detailed to perfection.
