Georgian Sampler, 1799, by Anne Strong. The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on a linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Unusual curly border. Colours red, yellow, light brown, pink, green and blue. Alphabets A-Z in upper case, numbers 1-10, and family initials. Verse reads, ‘Tho all is Innocence Within, It is Guilt to Wear the Garb of sin.’ And, ‘Laugh where we must be candid Where we can’. Signed and dated, ‘THIS WORK WAS DONE BY ME IN 1799 ANN STRONG AGED 15’. And also, ‘Ann Thompson March The 18th’. A good set of motifs, including a house, stags, a figure with a dog, crowns, a fruiting tree with birds in, a sailing ship, a lion, birds, an owl, a rabbit and potted flowering plants. Framed in a modern, gilt over wood, frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is stitched over acid free card. Frame backed with chipboard and sealed with tape. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.
