France – 19th
The Transition style is a French style whose genesis can be dated very precisely to 1758 when the avant-garde collector Ange-Laurent de la Live de Jully ordered a series of furniture from the architect Louis-Joseph le Lorain – visible in France at Château de Chantilly — which contrasts with the taste of the time. The transition style is, as its name indicates, a style of aesthetic transition which will mark the evolution of Louis XV towards Louis XVI. Thus the Transition style marks the stylistic evolution which, in the second half of the reign of Louis XV and at the very beginning of the reign of Louis XVI, is characterized by the abandonment of the curves and movement of Rocaille in favor of straight, refined and symmetry.
